SUrvey of Sedation in HospItal (SuSHi)

Objective

  • To quantify the type and distribution of sedation administered within hospitals in the South West region.

  • To develop methodology as a pilot for an upcoming national audit.

Protocol

  • A 1 day pilot was completed in October 2013.

  • A 2 day period of data collection was completed in December 2013 across all six Trusts in the southwest region.

For the first time, medical students from Peninsula Medical School participated in data collection for a SWARM project and their enthusiasm was invaluable! We hope that it will encourage further participation in research by medical students at an early stage in their career.

Inclusion criteria

  • All episodes of procedural sedation carried out within the hospital

  • In both adults and children

  • During both daylight hours and at night

Results

Data on 374 episodes of sedation were captured over the 2 day data collection period. Results available in Anaesthesia!
